Accident report request

If you need to request a copy of the official accident report, you are entitled to do it so via mail or personally at the SAAQ. This report will be available after 15 days the accident had occurred and any person interested can request it, having in mind that if it is not for yourself you will have to present a permit issued by one of the persons involved in the accident.

Canadian or US Drivers License Exchange

If you already have a driver's license from a foreign country, you may be entitled to exchange it for a valid one in Quebec to drive around Canada and the US. There are some regulations that allow you to drive for up to six months you arrived to the country, but if you plan to stay more than six months, you would have to hold a Driver's license issued in the SAAQ, as in Quebec there may be some different regulations and laws than in your country.

Claim for compensation

If you have suffered an accident in the last 3 years, you can claim for a compensation on the SAAQ. This procedure can be done online and it can be filled up by the person involved or a legal representative. Once all the details have been uploaded, the SAAQ will have to process the information ad after some time to consider your case it will give you an answer. Please keep in mind that there are some cases that are excluded from this plan.

Closed Track Road Test

For being able to drive a motorcycle, once you have completed your training, you can apply for the Closed Road test to earn your Class 6A learner’s licence. Please bear in mind that we do not provide the motorcycle nor the special protection you will need to pass the test, so you will have to be able to bring your own motorcycle, (respecting the limits and features explained on the SAAQ web) and them you will have to provide yourself with the protection helmet, gloves, clothes and all the protection gear needed to conduct a safe test.

Discarding a Vehicle

You may discard your vehicle if this one has been damaged after an accident or if it has become unusable due to other factors. If you wish not to use it anymore for your personal or professional use , you can put it out of circulation taking it to the scrap metal dealer or you can also opt for giving it to charity as a donation to some interested organization. To comply with the requirements of the SAAQ, you will have to be in possession of a valid ID (drivers licenses with picture) and the vehicle registration. After the transaction you will receive a receipt (Attestation de transaction avec un commerçant form) that you will need to present to the SAAQ as proof that you don't own that vehicle anymore.

Driver`s License Renewal

Every driver's license is subject of an expiration date depending on the vehicle type and the use you give to it. The expiration date could be from 4 to 8 years, the SAAQ is responsible for notify you before this period, so you have enough time to pay the fee and apply for a renewal (this is apart of the yearly fees you will have to pay to maintain your driving rights). Please bear in mind that driving a vehicle with an expired license is punishable and can lead you to a fine payment or even the subtraction of the vehicle for up to 30 days.

Green license plates for motorcycles

We count with 16 different license plates on our classification of vehicles, depending on the type and use you give to your vehicle, you will have to issue your vehicle in one category or another one. All motorcycles which are electric or feed with hydrogen fuel, or are rechargeable hybrid will be issued with a green license plate to be differentiated from the rest.

Heavy vehicle owner and operator records

There are certain rules and certificates that you will have to keep on order if your are the owner or the operator of a heavy vehicle destined to the transport of people or transport of goods. Some of the responsibilities that the owner will have is to keep the mechanical maintenance of the vehicle up to date, and to help and assure that every operator is updated with the information about Load standards, Dangerous goods transport, Travel permits, Load and Size limits, and others.

Issuance of a driver`s license

If you want to drive your vehicle you would have to be in possession of a valid driver's license. In Canada, there are some steps to follow before you get your definitive license, first you will have to pass a theoretical training and some practical lessons to be entitled for the “learners license”. Once in possession of the learners license, then you can access the exam from the SAAQ, and the road exam, if you pass, you will receive your definitive drivers license.

Issuance of a taxi driver`s permit

This is the drivers license class 4C. If you want to start driving a vehicle like a taxi or limousine, you will have to pass an exam on the SAAQ to prove you have enough knowledge of the rules and that you are aware of the responsibility that is to carry people with you. The exam is subject to a fee you will have to pay before the exam day, and then you will have to count with at least 12 months of driving experience before you apply to the class 4C licence. Bear in mind that also a Medical exam will be required.

Knowledge Test

After 10 months you got your first license, the learners license, you will be entitled to participate on the Knowledge test to comply with the first step to achieve your definitive drivers license. After making an appointment by phone or via the Internet, you will be scheduled with a test which you will have to finish in one hour. This test is made by all the information given on the 12 modules lessons you have available on the SAAQ web. Licensing a Stored Vehicle

If you need to License your stored vehicle to be able to use it freely, you will have to request a permit to the SAAQ. This transaction can be done ONLY on the same day you want to start using your vehicle. Licensing a Stored Vehicle (Businesses)

For those who want to license a store vehicle for your business, you may tramit your license on the same day you want to start operations. The SAAQ will issue a permit to put your vehicle on the road, please bear in mind, that if you store your vehicle for a year or more, a mechanical inspection will be mandatory before the license gets issued.

Lost or stolen driver´s license (replacement)

Depending if the license is stolen or lost and if you are in Quebec or outside the country, you will have to follow different procedures to replace your license. If the case is that your licence has been stolen, and you can identify the thief, please fill a police report as soon as possible and notify the SAAQ so we can help to to proceed on the easiest way to replace your permit. There are going to be some paper requirements to check if you are eligible or not to receive your drivers licence full (with photo and signature - the actual card) or just a driving permit that can last for 12 months. (After this period you will have to consult what are your options to renew your permit to the actual drivers license).

Lost or Stolen Registration (replacement)

In case you have a Lost or Stolen Registration plate, we can replace it for you. You have to register for an appointment at the SAAQ and maybe a fee will be issued before you get the new one.

Please, bear in mind that If you are in a posses of a damaged plate and it is a manufacturing defect, (Like if the reflective film wears off), you must ask the SAAQ to replace it as soon as possible, this may not have any cost for you, and it will only take you the time to do the paperwork.

Registration Renewal

Every year, the SAAQ will send you a notification stating that your Vehicle registration is about to expire and you must request a renewal. Please, bear in mind that there will be a fee you will have to pay before it expires to complete your request. Depending on the type of vehicle and the use you give to it, there are dead lines you will have to respect and the renewal must be BEFORE the expiration month assigned.

Relinquishment of a class of Driver`s License

In the possible scenario that you have to cancel your drivers license, you may have the option for a reimbursement of the fee by the SAAQ. There are some special or unforeseen circumstances that can lead you to not be interested in having your license for Quebec, like if the interested person is deceased, or just if you have a change of plans and you are not more interested in driving in Canada. Renewing a Health Insurance Card

Every person must hold a personal Health insurance card which allows you to benefit for medical attention including dental and specialization services. These cards are subjected to an expiration date depending on the time of residence in Quebec or, in the case of permanent residents, it could last from a year (for first cards granted) and then from 4 to 8 years. There are some exceptions when a card may not be necessary, like in the case of an emergency, but in general you will have to be in possession of a valid Health insurance card.

Replacement of cancellation of a Driver´s License

If you had cancelled your drivers licence due to unforeseen circumstances, and then you change your mind and think that it will be interesting for your personal objectives to be in possession of a driver's license again, you may change the status of your cancelation. Please, keep in mind that you will ONLY have 3 years to do it so, other way, if you already passed 3 years after your cancellation, you will have to take the knowledge test and the road test to be able to apply for the drivers license again.

Replacing a Health Insurance Card

If your Health insurance Card is lost, damaged or stolen, you are entitled for a new one filling a request online or presenting a form via mail. This procedure may be accompanied by the payment of a fee. The transaction for the new card can take up to 14 days after presentation, and it will be delivered to you right to your home address.

Winter Tire Exemption

The Ministère des Transports recommends that before the winter season you check that your vehicle is fully prepared to face the cold weather and the special circumstances that you may find during this cold season.

From December 1st to March 15th, it is MANDATORY that you circulate with winter tires in good conditions and that complies with the legal standards that the SAAQ requires. These tires are necessary to have better traction and to grip tightly. Please bear in mind that if you do not comply with the winter tires, you will be punished with fins up to 300 $ plus costs.

Vehicle Storage

There are some scenarios where the use of the vehicles could be stationary, like for example a snowmobile, that's only used on the winter periods. In these cases you can store your vehicle and ask for a refund of the part of the fees you paid to the SAAQ. Please bear in mind that depending on the type of vehicle you want to store, there will be different deadlines to complete your request.
